With his radical criticism of society and his deep concern for humanism he has carried Erich Fromm‘s thinking forward into our present age. Erich Fromm believed that ”the computer can serve the enhancement of life in many respects. But the idea that it replaces man and life is a manifestation of the pathology of today“. Paul Mason warns of the dangers stemming from the new right-wing populism and calls for technology to be placed in the service of mankind before we become slaves of artificial intelligence. In his books, articles and public statements, he enlightens us in the best sense of the word, and pleads passionately for reason and solidarity with others.

So – oder so ähnlich – hätte ich Sie gern begrüßt, wenn uns das Corona-Virus nicht einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht hätte. Erich Fromm, zu dessen hundertzwanzigstem Geburtstag wir heute den Frommpreis verlei-hen, hat einmal pointiert geschrieben, dass »die Erkenntnis der Wahrheit nicht in erster Li-nie eine Sache der Intelligenz, sondern des Charakters ist« (Jenseits der Illusionen. 1962a, GA IX, S. 155). When I bought Fromm's book, The Working Class in Weimar Germany, in a second hand bookstore in the 1980s, I did so mainly because I liked the art deco font on the binding.
